NCR and Carbonless Multi Part Form F.A.Q.
At thecitypress we are regularly asked about NCR and carbonless forms. In this section we will try to answer them!
» What is NCR Paper?
NCR - No-Carbon-Required - paper is a modern, fuss-free alternative to carbon paper and is used to make a copy of an original, handwritten document without the use of any electronics.
NCR is the trademarked name for carbonless paper and is owned by the NCR Corporation.
» What is Carbonless Copy Paper?
Carbonless, or carbon-less copy paper is the generic name for NCR - no carbon required - paper. Unless the carbonless paper you are using was manufactured by the NCR Corporation, it should be referred to as carbon-less paper.
Basically NCR paper and Carbonless paper are the same thing.
top ^» How is it Carbon-less Copy Paper?
Carbonless copy paper works in a fairly simple way. A NCR pad or carbonless form consists of several sheets of paper that are bound at one edge. Depending on where the individual carbonless sheet is within the form pile, it will be surface finished with either a micro-encapsulated dye or ink and/or a reactive clay.
The pressure of writing on the top sheet transfers the image to the sheets below without the use of carbon paper hence the name carbon-less.
» How Does Carbonless or NCR Copy Paper Work?
Imagine if you will a three part carbonless form. The top sheet is white, the middle canary and the bottom sheet pink.
The surfaces of each sheet in the carbonless form or carbonless pad are finished in a certain way:
- » The back of the top, white, sheet is coated with micro-encapsulated dye.
- » The front of the middle canary sheet is coated with a clay that quickly reacts with dye to form a permanent mark and the back of the canary sheet is coated with micro-encapsulated dye.
- » And finally the front of the lowermost pink sheet is coated with the clay and no coating is applied to the back side of the sheet.
When the top sheet is written on with a pen or pencil, the pressure from the tip of the writing instrument causes the micro-capsules on the reverse of the sheet to break and spill their dye. This dye is then adsorbed by the clay coating on the sheet below and the writing is fixed onto that sheet.
top ^» What is the Maximum Number of Carbonless Sheets I can use?
It is common to manufacture carbonless and NCR multi-part forms up to 5-parts, however it is possible to make a carbonless pad up to a maximum of fifteen pages thick.
